  • Benzene-1,2-disulfonamide

    CAS:

Benzene-1,2-disulfonamide is a sulfonamide that inhibits bacterial enzymes. It is an inhibitor of carbonic anhydrase, a human enzyme that catalyzes the conversion of carbon dioxide and water to bicarbonate. Benzene-1,2-disulfonamide has been shown to inhibit the growth of bacteria in vitro. The compound also has been found to be effective against some types of cancer cells, including those which are resistant to platinum-based chemotherapy. Benzene-1,2-disulfonamide binds to the active site of the bacterial enzyme and blocks its activity. The drug's high potency against anaerobic bacteria may be due to its ability to bind with nitro groups on proteins such as tetrahydrofolate reductase and cytochrome c oxidase.
