CAS:Producto controlado24-Hydroxycholesterol is a metabolite of cholesterol that can be found in the blood and urine. It has been studied for its role in x-linked adrenoleukodystrophy (XALD), which is a genetic disorder that affects the nervous system and the brain. Studies have shown that 24-hydroxycholesterol may regulate gene transcription by binding to specific antibodies. This substance also has significant cytotoxicity, which may be due to its hydroxyl group, and has been shown to protect neurons from cell death in rats. The major cause of XALD is mutations on the ABCD1 gene, which encodes for an enzyme responsible for breaking down 24-hydroxycholesterol. A diagnosis of XALD can be done using 24-hydroxycholesterol levels in urine samples.
