Deferiprone is a drug used to treat iron overload. It is an organoiron compound that competitively inhibits ferrochelatase, the enzyme responsible for the last step in heme synthesis. Deferiprone prevents the accumulation of iron in tissues and organs, as well as reversing or delaying organ damage caused by excess iron.
