Alcohol cetílico, también conocido como hexadecanol, es un alcohol graso de cadena larga con la fórmula química C16H34O. Es un sólido blanco y ceroso a temperatura ambiente e insoluble en agua, pero soluble en disolventes orgánicos como el etanol y el cloroformo. Alcohol cetílico se deriva de fuentes naturales, como el aceite de palma y el aceite de coco, y se utiliza comúnmente en productos cosméticos y de cuidado personal como emoliente, emulsionante y agente espesante. Su capacidad para estabilizar emulsiones lo hace valioso en formulaciones como cremas y lociones. Además, Alcohol cetílico tiene aplicaciones en la industria farmacéutica y como lubricante en varios procesos industriales. Se considera generalmente seguro para su uso en cosméticos, aunque algunas personas pueden experimentar sensibilidad. La sustancia tiene un punto de fusión típicamente alrededor de 49-50°C y un punto de ebullición de aproximadamente 344°C. 1-Hexadecanol is a monohydroxy alcohol that is used as a surfactant in analytical chemistry. It can be found naturally in the secretions of some glands and has an optimum concentration of 0.2% to 1%. 1-Hexadecanol has been shown to inhibit bacterial growth by reducing the mitochondrial membrane potential, which leads to cell death. 1-Hexadecanol also reacts with benzalkonium chloride to form ester hydrochloride, which is a reagent for the detection of bacteria. The reaction mechanism for this process is not yet fully understood, but it may involve a metastable form of 1-hexadecanol reacting with benzalkonium chloride.
