Trimetilpsoraleno (TMP) es un compuesto químico que pertenece a la clase de los psoralenos, conocidos por su capacidad para intercalarse con el ADN y formar enlaces cruzados al exponerse a la luz ultravioleta (UV). Se caracteriza por su estructura molecular, que incluye tres grupos metilo unidos al núcleo del psoraleno, lo que mejora su solubilidad y reactividad. TMP es típicamente un sólido cristalino incoloro a amarillo pálido y es soluble en disolventes orgánicos como el etanol y el dimetilsulfóxido (DMSO), pero tiene una solubilidad limitada en agua. Este compuesto se utiliza principalmente en fototerapia, particularmente para tratar afecciones cutáneas como la psoriasis y el vitiligo, ya que potencia los efectos de la terapia con luz UV. Además, TMP tiene aplicaciones en investigación, especialmente en estudios que involucran interacciones del ADN y fotobiología. It has been shown to have carcinogenic potential in vitro and in vivo. 4,5',8-Trimethylpsoralen inhibits transcription by binding to DNA polymerase II and III.
