This drug has antioxidative properties and may also have a protective effect against myocardial infarct. 3,4-DHBA binds to iron ions and prevents their oxidation, thereby preventing oxidative stress. It has been shown to have low potency due to its short half-life in vivo. 3,4-DHBA can inhibit the mitochondrial membrane potential and lead to apoptosis of primary cells and tissue culture cells.
