The optimal reaction of 4-chloro-4'-hydroxybenzophenone with hydrochloric acid occurs at a temperature of 40 degrees Celsius and an excess of 2 equivalents of hydrochloric acid per equivalent of 4-chloro-4'-hydroxybenzophenone. This chemical intermediate has been shown to be an environmental pollutant, as it reacts in the atmosphere with ozone or other oxidizing agents to form hydrogen chloride and aluminium chloride.
