Cyclohept-1-ene-1-carboxylic acid is a methyl ester. It can be synthesized by the reaction of benzyl chloride, methanol, and bromine in the presence of an alkali metal as a catalyst. The product is then treated with chlorine to give cyclohept-1-ene-1-carboxylic acid. Cyclohept-1-ene-1-carboxylic acid can be used as an esterification agent or as a precursor for other compounds such as tribromocycloheptane, which is used in the synthesis of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs).
