Descripción:
Lactulosa es un disacárido sintético compuesto de fructosa y galactosa, utilizado principalmente como laxante y en el tratamiento de la encefalopatía hepática. Es un líquido incoloro a amarillo claro, viscoso y soluble en agua, lo que facilita su administración. Lactulosa no se absorbe en el tracto gastrointestinal, lo que le permite ejercer sus efectos al atraer agua al colon, ablandando las heces y promoviendo los movimientos intestinales. Además, es fermentado por las bacterias colónicas, produciendo ácidos grasos de cadena corta y reduciendo el pH, lo que puede ayudar a reducir los niveles de amoníaco en pacientes con enfermedad hepática. Lactulosa tiene un sabor dulce, lo que lo hace agradable para el consumo oral. Su estabilidad bajo diversas condiciones de pH y su naturaleza no tóxica contribuyen a su uso generalizado en aplicaciones médicas. Aunque generalmente es bien tolerado, los efectos secundarios potenciales pueden incluir distensión abdominal, gases y diarrea, particularmente con dosis excesivas.
