CAS:Felinine is a compound derived from L-cysteine that belongs to the family group called Felidae. This urinary amino acid an odorless thioether excreted in cat urine and is a pheromone precursor. The biological pathway is not yet fully understood, but it seems that cauxin, a carboxylesterase excreted in urine, is capable of splitting 3-methylbutanol-cysteinylglycine, also known as 3-MBCG, into felinine and glycine. Research studies revelead that, over time, felinine and other related volatile compounds start to release some odor that may be responsible for communication and interaction in feline mammals. Similar compounds as 3-mercapto-3-methyl-1-butanol (FM35730), 3-mercapto-3-methyl-1-butyl-1-formate (FM35709) and 3-methyl-3-(methylsulfanyl)butan-1-ol (PDA00250) seems to be involved in the biological pathway.
