CAS:Nicotelline is an acetylcholine receptor agonist. It is a muscle disease control agent that may be used to treat or prevent nicotinic acetylcholine deficiency in people with chronic myopathies, neuromuscular diseases, and other conditions. Nicotelline has been shown to increase the activity of acetyl-CoA carboxylase, an enzyme that synthesizes malonyl-CoA, which is required for the synthesis of fatty acids and glycerolipids. Nicotelline also inhibits electron transport in mitochondria and has been shown to inhibit plant metabolism by inhibiting the conversion of methylene blue to its hydroxy derivative. This drug is typically used as a sample preparation reagent for chemical analyses in organic solvents such as chloroform, dichloromethane, ethylene dichloride, and methanol.
