Podofilotoxina es un lignano que se encuentra de forma natural y se deriva de las raíces de la planta mayapple, *Podophyllum peltatum*. Se caracteriza por su compleja estructura policíclica, que incluye un esqueleto de dibenzilbutirólactona. Este compuesto exhibe una actividad biológica significativa, particularmente como agente antitumoral, y se ha utilizado en el tratamiento de varios tipos de cáncer, incluyendo el cáncer testicular y ciertos tipos de lesiones cutáneas. Podofilotoxina funciona inhibiendo la enzima topoisomerasa II, que es crucial para la replicación del ADN y la división celular, lo que lleva a la muerte celular en células cancerosas que se dividen rápidamente.
