1-(2-Methoxybenzyl)piperazine (1-MBP) is a multitarget drug that has been shown to have medicinal properties. It inhibits the cholinergic system, which is involved in memory and cognition, as well as pathways such as the inflammatory response and amyloid production. 1-MBP has been shown to inhibit acetylcholinesterase, an enzyme that breaks down acetylcholine, thus increasing the amount of acetylcholine available for signaling. 1-MBP also inhibits cholinesterase, which increases the amount of acetylcholine in the brain. This drug may have synergistic effects with other drugs for Alzheimer's disease, such as donepezil and tacrine. 1-MBP has been used in optimization studies to find new potential treatments for Alzheimer's disease by targeting different aspects of its pathogenesis.
