(-)-Methylephedrine is a chemical compound that belongs to the group of amphetamines. It can be isolated from ephedrine, which is found in the plant Ephedra sinica. (-)-Methylephedrine has been used as an analytical reagent in chromatographic analysis and as a reference standard for the detection sensitivity of human pharmacokinetics. Monoclonal antibodies have been successfully generated against (-)-methylephedrine for control analysis and for use in immunoassays. (-)-Methylephedrine has been shown to inhibit the growth of bacteria such as Mycobacterium tuberculosis and Mycobacterium avium complex by inhibiting protein synthesis.
