6-Amino-1-butyl-5-(cyclopentylamino)pyrimidine-2,4(1H,3H)-dione is a histone deacetylase (HDAC) inhibitor that belongs to the class of pyridine compounds and imidazole derivatives. It has been shown to inhibit the growth of virus and cancer cells in vitro. 6-Amino-1-butyl-5-(cyclopentylamino)pyrimidine-2,4(1H,3H)-dione inhibits HDAC activity by binding to the enzyme's active site and forming a covalent bond with the amino acid residues. The functional theory for this drug is that it prevents the deacetylation of lysine residues on histones H3 and H4, which are necessary for transcriptional repression. This inhibition leads to activation of genes involved in apoptosis.
