Ácido etacrínico es un compuesto orgánico sintético clasificado como un diurético de asa, utilizado principalmente en el tratamiento del edema asociado con la insuficiencia cardíaca congestiva, cirrosis hepática y enfermedades renales. Se caracteriza por su fórmula química C13H12ClO4S y un peso molecular de aproximadamente 299.75 g/mol. Ácido etacrínico es un polvo cristalino blanco a blanco sucio que es soluble en agua y en disolventes orgánicos como el etanol y el metanol. Su mecanismo de acción implica la inhibición del cotransportador de sodio-potasio-cloruro en los túbulos renales, lo que lleva a un aumento de la excreción de sodio, cloruro y agua. Este efecto diurético ayuda a reducir la sobrecarga de líquidos en los pacientes. Ácido etacrínico también puede tener efectos secundarios potenciales, incluidos desequilibrios electrolíticos, deshidratación y ototoxicidad, particularmente cuando se usa en dosis altas o en pacientes con condiciones preexistentes. Ethacrynic acid is a non-competitive, reversible inhibitor of the Na+/K+-ATPase. It has been shown to be effective against cancer tissues and infectious diseases such as malaria, tuberculosis, and leishmaniasis. Ethacrynic acid inhibits 2,4-dichlorobenzoic acid (2,4-DCBA)-induced tumor growth in mice by inducing apoptosis in human leukemia cells. Ethacrynic acid also inhibits mitochondrial membrane potential and cellular physiology by decreasing the activity of enzymes which are involved in energy metabolism.
