Ácido 1,3-bencenodicarboxílico, 4-hidroxi-, 1,3-dimetil éster, comúnmente conocido como dimetil tereftalato, es un compuesto orgánico caracterizado por sus grupos funcionales de éster y su estructura aromática. Presenta dos grupos carboxilato unidos a un anillo de benceno, con grupos metilo adicionales que mejoran su solubilidad y reactividad. Este compuesto es típicamente un sólido cristalino incoloro con un olor agradable y es soluble en disolventes orgánicos como el etanol y la acetona, pero menos en agua. Se utiliza principalmente en la producción de poliésteres, particularmente tereftalato de polietileno (PET), que se utiliza ampliamente en textiles y botellas de plástico.
