It can be used as an optical sensor for detecting bacterial infections, and has been shown to have synergistic effects with other antibiotics such as erythromycin against Gram-positive bacteria. Dithizone binds to the ribosome and prevents the formation of peptide bonds, preventing protein synthesis and leading to cell death. This antibiotic also has a low toxicity for humans, which may be due to its ability to inhibit human plasma enzymes such as group P2.
