The apoptotic effect of 3-hydroxyterphenyllin is due to its ability to activate pro-apoptotic proteins such as Bax and Bak, which are involved in the mitochondrial membrane potential and the release of cytochrome c from mitochondria. 3-Hydroxyterphenyllin also inhibits nuclear DNA synthesis by binding to nucleic acid bases, preventing their incorporation into DNA strands.
