It has been shown to have high efficiency in the transfection of DNA into cells and polymers that are biodegradable and can be dissolved in water. This chemical compound also has an acidic pH range, which makes it useful for the treatment of intracellular environments with a low pH. N-(tert-Butoxycarbonyl)-1,4-diaminobutane has been shown to cause cytotoxicity in cells at high concentrations, but has no effects on cells at lower concentrations. The disulfide bonds of this compound make it endosomal-lytic and nonviral.
