It binds to the glutamate binding site of the NMDAR and activates it by increasing the flow of sodium ions into neurons. This drug has been used as a research tool for studying the role of this receptor in neuronal excitability and as an inhibitor for many protein interactions. N1-Butyl-4-(morpholine-4-sulfonyl)benzene-1,2-diamine is also a ligand for opioid receptors and can be used to study their function.
