Descripción:
Iridio es un metal de transición denso y de color blanco plateado que pertenece al grupo de elementos del platino, conocido por su notable resistencia a la corrosión y la oxidación. Tiene un alto punto de fusión y es uno de los metales más resistentes a la corrosión, lo que lo hace valioso en diversas aplicaciones industriales. Iridio se encuentra típicamente en la naturaleza como una aleación con otros metales del grupo del platino y a menudo se extrae de minerales de níquel y cobre. Su número atómico es 77 y exhibe una variedad de estados de oxidación, siendo +3 y +4 los más comunes en compuestos. Iridio se utiliza en aplicaciones de alta temperatura, contactos eléctricos y bujías, así como en la producción de ciertos tipos de catalizadores. Además, debido a su rareza y propiedades únicas, Iridio también se utiliza en instrumentos científicos especializados y en el campo de la joyería. Su alta densidad y dureza contribuyen a su durabilidad, mientras que su inercia química lo hace adecuado para su uso en entornos hostiles.
