Descripción:
Cerio es un metal dúctil de color blanco plateado que pertenece a la serie de los lantánidos de la tabla periódica, con el número atómico 58 y el número CAS 7440-45-1. Se conoce por su relativamente alto punto de fusión y es uno de los elementos de tierras raras más abundantes. Cerio exhibe una variedad de estados de oxidación, siendo los más comunes +3 y +4, que contribuyen a su diverso comportamiento químico. Se oxida fácilmente en el aire, formando una capa de óxido protectora, y puede reaccionar con agua a temperaturas elevadas. Los compuestos de Cerio, como el óxido de Cerio, se utilizan ampliamente como catalizadores en convertidores catalíticos automotrices y en diversas aplicaciones industriales, incluyendo el pulido de vidrio y como componente en fósforos para iluminación. Además, Cerio tiene aplicaciones en metalurgia y como aditivo en ciertas aleaciones para mejorar sus propiedades. Sus características únicas hacen de Cerio un elemento importante tanto en contextos industriales como tecnológicos.
