CAS:Producto controladoBismuth is a metal that has been used in the treatment of infectious diseases. It is an element with atomic number 83, symbol Bi, and atomic weight 208.904. Bismuth is unique in that it has the highest naturally occurring radioactivity of any element. This property makes bismuth useful for certain medical purposes, such as treating infectious diseases and cancer. Bismuth's coordination geometry can be described as octahedral with a low-dose group consisting of six water molecules and two ligands comprising either citrate or oxalate ions. The ligands bind to bismuth by means of a strong S-S bond in a 2:1 ratio and are coordinated to the metal through oxygen atoms. The redox potential for bismuth is -0.792 V versus standard hydrogen electrode (SHE). It was reported that the reaction mechanism for bismuth is similar to that of other metals, involving oxidation from +3 to +5
