Lovastatina es una estatina de origen natural, utilizada principalmente como medicamento para reducir el colesterol. Se deriva de la fermentación del hongo Aspergillus terreus. La estructura química de Lovastatina presenta un anillo de hexahidronaftaleno y un moiety de lactona, que es crucial para su actividad biológica. Como inhibidor competitivo de la HMG-CoA reductasa, una enzima involucrada en la biosíntesis del colesterol, Lovastatina reduce efectivamente los niveles de colesterol de lipoproteínas de baja densidad (LDL) en el torrente sanguíneo. Se administra típicamente por vía oral y es conocido por su relativamente buena biodisponibilidad, aunque sufre un metabolismo de primer paso significativo en el hígado.
