Meldonium, también conocido como Mildronato, es un compuesto sintético utilizado principalmente como medicamento para tratar condiciones cardíacas isquémicas y mejorar el rendimiento físico. Fue desarrollado en la década de 1970 en Letonia y se clasifica como un modulador metabólico. La fórmula química de Meldonium es C5H13N1O2, y presenta una estructura única que incluye un anillo de 1,2,4-triazol. Meldonium actúa inhibiendo la enzima carnitina aciltransferasa, que juega un papel en el metabolismo de los ácidos grasos, promoviendo así la utilización de glucosa sobre los ácidos grasos para la producción de energía.
