This compound is a prodrug for the formation of 4-hydroxyphenylacetic acid, which then undergoes a glycosidic bond with collagen to form 3,4-dihydroxybenzoic acid. The hydroxyl group on this molecule also reacts with benzylic amino groups on proteins and nucleophilic groups on carbohydrates to form covalent bonds. These reactions lead to the formation of a variety of compounds that can be used as drugs for inflammatory bowel disease.
