4-Methyl-6-(4-methylphenylsulfonyl)pyrimidine-2-ylamine (MPP+) is a hydroxy group section molecule with antiviral potency. MPP+ has been shown to have antiviral activity against HIV and influenza virus in vitro. The mechanism of action for MPP+ is not well understood, but it does inhibit the sensor protein that senses heat energy as well as the active site of the viral enzyme. MPP+ also inhibits the synthesis of RNA and DNA, which may be due to its ability to bind to aromatic hydrocarbons in cellular membranes. This binding causes a decrease in molecular mobility and an increase in viscosity, thus preventing cell division and inhibiting viral replication. The drug's antiviral effects are enhanced by using an optical sensor plate reader method.
