2-Phenyl-5H-imidazo[4,5-c]pyridine (2-PI) is a pyridine derivative that has inotropic and vasodilator effects. It is used in pharmaceutical formulations for the treatment of heart failure and angina. 2-PI also acts as an anticoagulant by inhibiting the synthesis of prothrombin and fibrinogen. Furthermore, it increases the production of cAMP, which leads to increased levels of phosphodiesterase. The oxidizing properties of 2-PI have been shown to be helpful in treating bronchial asthma.
