It is used as an analytical reagent for determination of nitrite, and has been shown to have antiviral and anti-inflammatory activities. 4-Nitro-L-phenylalanine has also been shown to inhibit the growth of human leukemia cells and enhance their sensitivity to chemotherapy drugs.
