Erythromycin-d6 is a deuterated form of Erythromycin. Erythromycin, produced by actinomycetes, is a macrolide antibiotic (antibiotic) known for its broad antimicrobial activity. It functions by binding to the 50S ribosomal subunit of bacteria, thereby inhibiting RNA-dependent protein synthesis through the blockage of transpeptidation and/or translocation reactions, without affecting nucleic acid synthesis.

Erythromycin-d6 is a metabolite of erythromycin that is used to measure the activity of cytochrome P450 enzymes. Erythromycin-d6 is prepared by oxidizing erythromycin with acetaminophen in an on-line system, which then reacts with the substrate caffeine. This reaction produces a fluorescent product, which is monitored by spectrophotometry. The assay can be applied to wastewater samples for the determination of estrogenic and androgenic hormones. The assay also has been optimized for the determination of efficiencies for bioreactor systems.
