Metacrilato de butilo (BMA) es un compuesto orgánico clasificado como un éster, específicamente el éster butílico del ácido metacrílico. Es un líquido incoloro a amarillo pálido con un olor afrutado característico. Se conoce que el BMA tiene excelentes propiedades de adhesión, flexibilidad y resistencia a la luz UV, lo que lo convierte en un componente valioso en diversas aplicaciones, incluyendo recubrimientos, adhesivos y selladores. La sustancia tiene una volatilidad moderada y es soluble en disolventes orgánicos como el etanol y la acetona, pero es insoluble en agua. Su estructura química presenta un grupo metacrilato, que contribuye a sus capacidades de polimerización, permitiéndole formar polímeros duraderos cuando se somete a calor o iniciadores. El BMA también es reconocido por su baja toxicidad, aunque se deben tomar las medidas de seguridad adecuadas durante su manipulación debido a la posible irritación de la piel y respiratoria. En general, Metacrilato de butilo es un monómero importante en la producción de polímeros y copolímeros acrílicos, ampliamente utilizado en la fabricación de pinturas, plásticos y otros materiales.
