This drug inhibits the proliferation of tumor cells by binding to DNA and preventing RNA synthesis or protein synthesis in the cell's ribosomes. Adriamycin also binds to leucovorin, which is a form of folic acid that prevents its toxicity in the body.

The mechanism for inhibition has been studied using molecular dynamics simulations and kinetic studies. 1H-Pyrrole-3-carbothioamide inhibits viral replication in vitro by inhibiting the function of HIV reverse transcriptase. This compound also shows activity against other RNA viruses such as Hepatitis C virus, Influenza A virus, and West Nile Virus.
