The compound is a potent adenosine receptor antagonist and has been shown to inhibit the production of chemokines in cultured cells. Cyclopentanecarboxamide also inhibits the activation of hydrogen bond-dependent enzymes such as fatty acid synthase and lipoxygenase. This inhibition leads to an anti-inflammatory effect by reducing inflammation caused by these enzymes. Cyclopentanecarboxamide also has been shown to reduce the incidence of myocardial infarcts in rats when given before or after coronary artery ligation.
