It is prepared by reacting benzyl chloride with ethanolamine in the presence of phosphine, chlorine and catalytic amounts of iodine. The reaction product is purified by fractional distillation to yield 5-fluoro-8-methylquinoline. This compound can also be synthesized from chlorination of cyclic or carbonyl compounds with phosphine and chlorine, as well as from iodides and sulfate.
