The former is a mixture, whereas the latter is a single pure enantiomer. 5-Bromo-2-cyclopropylpyrimidine can be separated into its two components by using chiral columns and then analyzed by NMR spectroscopy. The individual peaks in the spectrum correspond to either one or the other of the two possible configurations.

The selective formation of one regioisomer can be achieved by using a chiral catalyst or by reacting with an optically active reagent such as (+)-camphor sulfonic acid.
