It has been shown to be an effective drug for the treatment of cancer and bowel disease. DMPI inhibits fatty acid synthesis in cardiac muscle cells by binding to the enzyme ACAT. This leads to reduced fatty acids and increased energy production for cardiac cells. DMPI also has inhibitory properties on isolated heart cells and nitroprusside (NTP).
