Nickel(II) bromide trihydrate is also a good catalyst for the synthesis of polymers with various functional groups. In addition, it can be used to synthesize ketones from imines and anions. Nickel(II) bromide trihydrate has been shown to have potential applications in cancer therapy as well as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). The magnetic properties of this compound are due to the presence of unpaired electrons on nickel ions. X-ray crystal structures have revealed that the molecule consists of two nickel ions that are coordinated by six bromide ligands arranged in a trigonal bipyramid shape.
