The main structural components from the coronavirus group of viruses are the viral envelopeand the nucleocapsid, which contains the positive (+) sense single-stranded RNA.

This type of virus causes infections in the respiratory system such as the ones observed in known cases of SARS, MERS and now in COVID-19 (whose virus is named SARS-CoV-2).

SARS-CoV-2has a membrane glycoprotein in its envelope, which is responsible for adhesion to the host cell. The goal of current drug development is to prevent binding of virus with the host cell, its protein expression, and/or its replication once inside.
