5-(Hydroxymethyl)-2,4-dimethylpyridin-3-ol (HMP) is a basic, naturally occurring chemical that has been found to have chemotherapeutic effects. HMP may be useful in the treatment of autoimmune diseases and bowel disease. It can also be used as a biomarker for the detection of some cancers, such as carcinoma cell lines. HMP induces transcriptional regulation by inhibiting the enzyme activities of various transcription factors and polymerase chain reaction (PCR). In addition, it inhibits angiotensin II receptor type 1 (AT1) binding and subsequent signaling. This compound is also used as an intermediate in the synthesis of benzalkonium chloride which is a quaternary ammonium compound with disinfectant properties.
