Tetrachlorotoluene is a chlorinating agent that is used to introduce chlorine into organic compounds. Tetrachlorotoluene is typically used in the production of methyl derivatives. It reacts with methoxy groups, which are found in many organic compounds, to produce chloroform and hydroxylamine. The reaction proceeds through the addition of chloride ions to the double bond of tetrachlorotoluene, followed by the elimination of water. This process also produces thionyl chloride as an impurity.
Tetrachlorotoluene is easily displaced from its position on the benzene ring by nucleophiles such as hydroxylamine, which can be produced in situ from hydrochloric acid and ammonia.
