4-Tetrahydrophthalic Acid Sodium Salt is a cross-linking agent that is used in the production of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and other vinyl resins. It is also used as a binder to coat paper or paperboard and to make plastics such as polyester, polyurethane, and acrylonitrile butadiene styrene. 4-Tetrahydrophthalic Acid Sodium Salt reacts with 4-hydroxybenzoic acid which is then reacted with a vinyl ether to produce an ester. This ester reacts with a caproic acid to form an amide, which can be further modified by reaction with a cycloaliphatic compound. The resulting product can be used as a functional theory for the production of coatings and binders for use in applications such as paper or paperboard.
