5-tert-Butyl-1,2,3-trimethylbenzene is an ionic liquid that is used as a solvent. It can be prepared by the reaction of nitronium chloride and tert-butyl alcohol. 5-tert-Butyl-1,2,3-trimethylbenzene has a relatively low boiling point and is soluble in water. The reaction time for this compound is short and it reacts with nitrite to form tertiary amine and nitric oxide gas. This compound also reacts with methyl ethers to form tertiary amines or methyl acetate if heated at high temperatures for long periods of time. 5-tert-Butyl-1,2,3-trimethylbenzene is acidic in nature and can catalyze reactions when mixed with organic compounds such as butyric acid or diastereomeric methyl ethers.
