4-Nitrophenetole is a cell-impermeable drug that inhibits protein synthesis in bacteria by binding to the dinucleotide phosphate, which prevents the formation of an enzyme complex with the ribosomes. It is also able to inhibit wild-type strains of bacteria and is not active against recombinant virus. 4-Nitrophenetole is bacteriostatic at neutral pH and exhibits its strongest activity against wild-type bacterial strains at pH 5. It has been shown to inhibit protein synthesis in rat liver microsomes and nucleophilic enzymes such as dehydrogenases and phosphotransferases.
