Styrene has been shown to be susceptible to polymerization by free radicals at high temperatures. This reaction can be initiated by an inorganic initiator or by cationic polymerization with a quaternary ammonium salt. Styrene undergoes copolymerization with monomers such as trimethylolpropane, forming low molecular weight elastomers. Irradiation can also induce polymerization, producing high molecular weight elastomers with improved mechanical properties.
