DCU is an alkylsulfonylurea pesticide that is used to control the growth of bacteria. DCU has been shown to have a broad spectrum of activity against both gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria, including strains resistant to nitro and hydroxy groups. DCU is also effective as an algicide, fungicide, and nematocide.
DCU inhibits bacterial growth by binding to the enzyme glutamate dehydrogenase, which catalyzes the conversion of α-ketoglutarate into glutamate. This blocks the synthesis of crotonic acid needed for bacterial cell growth.
