4-Hydroxy-4-methyl-2-pentanone is a chemical compound that belongs to the group of nitrogen compounds. It is an organic peroxide with the molecular formula CH3COCH2CH(OH)CH2O. 4-Hydroxy-4-methyl-2-pentanone has been shown to be a competitive inhibitor for the enzyme acetaldehyde dehydrogenase (ALDH). This inhibition leads to an accumulation of acetaldehyde, which can lead to symptoms such as nausea and vomiting. 4-Hydroxy-4-methyl-2-pentanone also inhibits other enzymes involved in alcohol metabolism, such as alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH), cytochrome P450 2E1, and catalase.
