Nonyl Acetate is a conditioning agent that is used in the production of glycol ethers, detergents, and polymer films. It is also used as a fluorescence probe to study chemical stability and as an odorant binding agent. Nonyl acetate has been shown to inhibit the growth of viruses such as HIV-1 and herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2) by preventing the synthesis of viral proteins. This inhibition is caused by the attachment of nonyl acetate to the hydroxyl group on caproic acid, which inhibits the activity of cellular enzymes. The inhibition of these enzymes prevents RNA replication and protein translation.
