It can be synthesized from ethylenediamine by reaction with a trialkyl orthoformate and an acid catalyst. This chemical has a hydroxyl group and two asymmetric nitrogen atoms. The steric interactions between the hydrogen atom on the nitrogen atom and the three methyl groups on one carbon atom are responsible for its kinetic data.
