Trans-(1R,2S)-2-phenylcyclopropan-1-amine (TCPA) is a drug that inhibits the enzyme monoamine oxidase. It has been shown to inhibit the activity of 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) in various cell types and its concentration. TCPA also affects mitochondrial membrane potential and iron homeostasis pathways. The drug was found to be a potent inhibitor of protein kinases, inhibiting signal transduction pathways in both cell culture and animal models. TCPA is a competitive inhibitor of the enzyme monoamine oxidase type A (MAO-A). It binds reversibly to MAO-A, preventing the breakdown of monoamines such as dopamine, norepinephrine, and serotonin. This inhibition results in increased levels of these neurotransmitters which may lead to neurotoxic effects.
